The Journalism Value Survey - Dataprotection

Who is behind this?

Netzwerk Recherche e.V. (NR) is a non-profit journalism network and the German association of investigative journalists, founded in 2001. NR is an independent organization, and only pursues goals with a clear public benefit. In 2022 NR published the pioneering “New Sector Report" which analysed Europe’s independent media scene for the first time. The "Journalism Value Survey", now conducted by NR, is the first step in the "Journalism Value Project", a two-year collaboration between Netzwerk Recherche, Fumaça, Investigate Europe, Átlátszó Erdély and project lead Reference as part of Arena for Journalism in Europe.

Taking part in the survey

Taking part in this survey is voluntary. The survey can be terminated at any time without any reasons. You can decline to answer any particular question or questions.

What if I don’t want to share internal/fiscal data?

We can only help to shape the future of Europe’s independent media landscape if we know what its needs are. That’s why we ask for business data. We assure you that any kind of sensitive information will only be analysed anonymously, with no link to you or your organisation whatsoever. Some basic information about you organisation - such as your location, website or editorial focus - will be used for mapping the media landscape and will show your organisation’s name. Anonymously analysed data are clearly marked in the questionnaire.

Is my data safe?

Of course, it is. We take data protection very seriously, especially since we ask for sensitive information. During the survey field phase your answers will be initially stored in a database on a server of SoSci Survey. The online tool SoSci is in line with European data protection laws. The survey uses cookies, if enabled in your browser, to offer the option to pause the interview and proceed later. After the completion of the field phase data will be transmitted to Netzwerk Recherche e.V.. Survey data and backups will be deleted from SoSci servers no later than September 2024. The data will be stored and proceeded by the project team at Netzwerk Recherche e.V. and exclusively used for the purpose of the study.

If you gave consent to safe your contact information for use in the lottery, or a mailing list/newsletter, it will be used accordingly. Contact information will be separated from the survey data. You can request further details of data processing at NR (email to floether@nrch.de).

Publications of survey results will not contain any references that could be traced down to individual organisations. Exceptions to this are basic information on independent European news media, that will be used for a mapping, this includes ONLY:

  • name of the organisation
  • website URL
  • location
  • profit/non-profit/charitable status
  • geographic scope
  • editorial focus and main scope of your media organisation
