Dear students and employees of Leuphana University of Lüneburg,
We would like to invite you to participate in a Leuphana-wide online survey on the topic of "Sexualized violence and sexual harassment at the university". The survey is open until 28.02.2026.
Sexualized violence and sexual harassment can take various forms and can be directed against anyone (not only women). Therefore, this survey is aimed at all members of the Leuphana University community. In order to obtain a comprehensive overview, it is necessary that as many university members as possible participate in the survey. Therefore, please participate even if you have NOT previously encountered the issue of "sexual violence and sexual harassment at the university". Sexualized violence can include verbal, non-verbal, or physical sexualized acts that have the goal and/or effect of degrading a person. The decisive factor is that the actions violate the dignity of the affected person and are perceived by them as unpleasant or undesirable.
The aim of the survey is to obtain a well-founded picture of the specific situation at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Based on this, we will be able to offer existing measures and services for the prevention of and intervention in sexualized violence and sexual harassment in the university context even more effectively, and, if necessary, supplement them with additional measures and services.
The survey is conducted by the Central Equal Opportunities Officer and the group of decentralized Equal Opportunities Officers (Prof. Dr. Sarah Engler, Prof. Dr. Oliver Genschow, Prof. Dr. Maren Haffke, Dr. Fabienne Moreau, Prof. Dr. Birte Siem, Dr. Anja Thiem, Dr. Kathrin van Riesen, Prof. Dr. Christian Welzel). Most of the questions come from the UniSAFE project, an EU-funded initiative aimed at reducing gender-based violence in academia (for further information on the UniSAFE project, see here).
The university management supports the implementation of this study and invites all university members to participate.
Below, we would like to provide you with further information about the survey. Please read this information carefully and then provide your consent to participate at the bottom of the page.
Procedure and Content
At the beginning of the survey, you will be asked to provide some information about your affiliation with Leuphana University as well as your sociodemographic background, such as your age and gender. This is followed by various questions about your own direct and indirect experiences with sexual harassment and sexualized violence, both in direct contact and online. Finally, we will ask you a few questions about existing and desired services and measures for the prevention of and intervention in sexualized violence and sexual harassment. On average, the survey takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Potential distress and risks
Engaging with questions on the topic of sexualized violence and sexual harassment may evoke negative feelings in some circumstances. You always have the option to skip questions if you feel uncomfortable answering them.

also leads to a list of contact points and support services (internal and external) that you may contact if needed. The link will also be repeated at several points throughout the survey as well as on the final page.
Voluntary Participation
Participation in the survey is voluntary. You may end the survey at any time without providing a reason or skip questions without any negative consequences.
Data protection and anonymity
Data protection is particularly important to us. Data collected as part of the survey will be processed in accordance with the legal provisions of Art. 13 of the GDPR and will only be used for the purpose of this study. Nowhere in the survey will we collect data that allow direct identification of individuals (e.g., name, email address). For data protection reasons, please do not enter any names or addresses in the free-text fields of the questionnaire. If statements are nevertheless made in the survey that enable the identification of persons, these will be anonymized during data processing. During this data processing, access to any personal data that may arise is restricted to the project team mentioned above (Prof. Dr. Sarah Engler, Prof. Dr. Oliver Genschow, Prof. Dr. Maren Haffke, Dr. Fabienne Moreau, Prof. Dr. Birte Siem, Dr. Anja Thiem, Dr. Kathrin van Riesen, Prof. Dr. Christian Welzel).
You may also revoke your consent to the use of your data directly at the end of the study (in this case, your data will be deleted and will not be included in the analysis). Any publication of the data collected in this study will only take place in fully anonymized form. For detailed information, please click on
Data protection information
1. Participation in the research project
We will use your survey data (relationship to Leuphana, type and position of employment, intended degree, faculty affiliation/administration, age, gender, internationality, nationality and experiences with sexualized violence and sexual harassment) for the following research activities: 1) Analysis of the frequency of various forms of sexualized violence and sexual harassment at Leuphana. 2) Analysis of the frequency of various contexts in which sexualized violence and sexual harassment were experienced, observed, or perpetrated. 3) Analysis of the frequency of various perpetrator–victim relationships. 4) Analysis of the relationship between various sociodemographic characteristics and sexualized violence and sexual harassment. 5) Analysis of prevention and intervention needs. 6) Comparison of survey data with data from other universities participating in the UniSAFE project. These activities are carried out on the basis of your voluntarily declared consent. The legal basis is therefore Art. 6(1)(a), Art. 9(2)(a) of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
2. Archiving
For archiving and review purposes, the survey data will be stored using the technical systems of Leuphana University of Lüneburg during the research project as well as for an additional 10 years in accordance with the German Research Foundation (DFG) guidelines on good scientific practice. During the research project, access is restricted solely to the researchers of the project group (Prof. Dr. Sarah Engler, Prof. Dr. Oliver Genschow, Prof. Dr. Maren Haffke, Dr. Fabienne Moreau, Prof. Dr. Birte Siem, Dr. Anja Thiem, Dr. Kathrin van Riesen, Prof. Dr. Christian Welzel). After the project ends and scientific archiving has been completed, access will occur only on a case-by-case basis, i.e., if justified doubts about the quality of the research or the data arise and a scientific review becomes necessary. All of this is conducted on the basis of your voluntarily declared consent. The legal basis is therefore Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR.
3. Anonymization
Your survey data (relationship to Leuphana, type and position of employment, intended degree, faculty affiliation/administration, age, gender, internationality, nationality and experiences with sexualized violence and sexual harassment) will be anonymized as soon as the research purpose allows. Identifiable characteristics will be irreversibly removed from the dataset. The legal basis for anonymization is Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 5(1)(e) GDPR.
4. Provision in scientific repositories
To enable other researchers to investigate additional aspects of the data collected in this research project, we will—if you consent—provide the fully anonymized survey data to the scientific repository of Leuphana University of Lüneburg (PubData Leuphana) for access-restricted availability to researchers officially registered with PubData under regulated conditions of use. Anonymization guarantees that identification of you or any other individual is excluded. We carry out anonymization in accordance with the section “Anonymization.” The possible uses of the survey data are bound to compliance with recognized ethical standards of scientific research as defined by the guidelines of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Researchers may use the data under these conditions to produce academic work. Access by researchers to these data is based on your voluntarily declared consent. The legal basis is therefore Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR.
5. Publication
Publications that we issue as part of the research project will not contain any personal data. Publications contain only anonymized data that does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about you.
6. Documentation of consent
If you have given your consent to the processing of your personal data, your consent will be recorded and stored in machine-readable form together with the exact time it was granted. We store this data for the legally required documentation of your consent.
The legal basis for this data processing is Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 5(2) and Art. 7(1) GDPR.
General information:
Even if you do not exercise the rights listed below, your data will only be stored for as long as is necessary for the purposes mentioned above. This does not apply if a longer storage or retention period is legally required or necessary for legal enforcement within statutory limitation periods. If data is retained solely for the purposes described above, access is restricted to the extent necessary for these purposes.
We generally keep your data confidential and make it available only to employees who need it to perform their duties. This does not apply if we are legally obliged to disclose it.
We would like to inform you that providing your data is neither legally nor contractually required. If you do not consent to data processing, this will not result in any negative consequences for you.
Automated decision-making, including profiling within the meaning of Art. 22(1) and (4) GDPR, does not take place.
Your right to withdraw your declaration of consent:
You have the right to revoke your consent at any time with effect for the future. This means that the lawfulness of processing carried out on the basis of your consent before its withdrawal remains unaffected. Your withdrawal may be submitted informally and does not require justification. You will not incur any disadvantages by revoking your consent.
Your additional rights:
You have the right to request information from us about the processing of your data. This right to information includes, in addition to a copy of the data, the purposes of the processing, the recipients of the data, and the storage period.
If incorrect data is being processed, you may request immediate correction of such data. If the legal requirements pursuant to Art. 17 or 18 GDPR are met, you are also entitled to the right to immediate deletion or restriction of processing of your data. Please note that restricted processing may not always be possible.
